The Greater Manchester Track & Field Championships took place over the weekend of 13th and 14th May at Trafford AC.
East Cheshire’s Jake Smith has made the headlines this weekend with a brilliant Gold medal in the under 17 men’s high jump, with a magnificent jump of 1.66 meters. Jake had a special supporter with the Civic Major of Tameside Cllr Phillip Fitzpatrick cheering him on. He was joined by Mayors from Stockport, Trafford, Salford and Wigan, who had got together to present medals that had been won during the morning session. There were lots of other brilliant performances from East Cheshire athletes over the weekend, some of the highlights were:
Day 1 – Emily Hughes 2nd place in the women’s 1500m in 5.05.55, George Lewis 2nd in the senior men’s 1500m in 4.16.48 (1st under 20), Mike Coogan 3rd in the senior men’s 200m with 23.59, Alfi Farrell 3rd in the under 17 women’s 80m hurdles with a time of 16.02, John Trotman 2nd in the under 20 men’s 400m with 51.54, Ty Brockley Langford 2nd in the under 15 girls 800m with 2.21.56, Megan Lewis 3rd in the under 15 girls Javelin with 20.80 meters, Bethany Pearson with a brilliant 1st place in the senior women’s hammer with 38.06 meters and Melanie Lee 2nd in the same event with 33.13 meters.
Day 2 – George Lewis won another Gold medal in the under 20 men’s 2K steeplechase with a time of 6.14.01 which was a new PB and the 6th fastest time in the UK this year. Abby O’Neil 2nd in the under 17 women’s Javelin with 32.24 meters.
