East Cheshire athletes Ian Fraser & Saul Gallagher competed for Great Britain at the World Masters Mountain Running Championships on Sunday 29th September held in the Puglia region at the Southern most tip of Italy.
The race was held over a 7 mile course comprising of 3 laps with 1800ft of climb around the Trofeo Ciolo Gorge and finishing in the town of Gagliano Del Capo. Conditions were unseasonably warm and described as being brutally severe comprising of 30 degrees heat with 90 per cent humidity.
The course was quite technical and either up or down with very little in between, whilst challenging it was the savage weather conditions which posed the greater challenge.
Both had excellent runs in the vet 50 age category with Ian finishing 29th in 70 mins 12 secs (4th counter home for GB) and Saul finishing 40th in 77 mins 12 secs (5th counter home for GB) out of 126 finishers on the day.
An amazing achievement from both – well done!!
