Chris Fairfield has run his last race and the world is a sadder place for that. Uncle Chris achieved a lot in his life, running in hundreds of marathons (including the Himalayas high altitude marathon). He was a member of the North East Cheshire Harriers and in his peak a 2:40 marathon man. He regularly competed with Ron Hill for the top position of his age group. He was selected to carry the Commonwealth torch on the Stalybridge hill phase before the 2002 Manchester games. He will be remembered by some as the bloke who rummaged through bins at each race meet. This was for the empty drinks cans to raise money for Whizz-Kidz ( www.whizz-kidz.org.uk ), which he raised over 800,00 pound. He sort no adulation and only ran and raised money because he could. He was 75 years old when he died on Thursday 12th September of Alzheimer’s disease. Rest easy uncle Chris. God bless.
