On a beautiful spring Saturday morning there were always going to be distractions but those who turned out found a very well organised relay race hosted by community club East Cheshire Harriers. The venue for once was not the clubs track or grassy cross country course but the tarmac of the cycle track next door.Totally safe and with a circuit of just short of 1km it makes an ideal introduction to relay running. Each team comprised a pupil from yr 6 ,5, 4 and 3 which could set out in any order so that adults could decide on tactics. There were two races ; Girls and Boys.
After some competitive racing, particularly in the girls race where a perfectly timed run saw Russell Scott claim the victory from Our Lady’s. The results were:
Girls race
1.Russell Scott
2.Our Lady of Mount Carmel
3.The Heys
Boys race
1.Russell Scott
2.The Heys
3.St Peters Ashton
Without volunteers introductions to competitive sport would be very limited. Members of East Cheshire Harriers organused the race , manned the start and finish as well as providing marshalls. Primary school teachers, who receive no extra for giving up Saturday mornings, organised their teams and provided great encouragement. The whole atmosphere was very positive.
